Why?

After 14 years of LA, the things we didn't like about living here finally wore us down and we decided to move away. Our first choice was Portland, Oregon. After months of interviewing, neither of us could secure a job. We turned our sights to the next city on the list, New York. We lined up jobs and moved at the end of March 2008.

Apparently this was a bad idea. Things were not as they seemed and New York was not a good fit. We learned some good, hard lessons about life. We moved back to LA (four months later!) because the most important things were:

- be with our friends and close to our sisters
- advance our careers in a market we understand
- enjoy a low cost of living so we can save & travel

This is what makes us happy and apparently we had to move away to get our priorities straight. We still LOVE NEW YORK! We just enjoy it more as tourists...

DAY OFF! Exploring New York

Slept in til 11:30. Met M at Tavalon Tea on Union Square. I was hunting down the Amai Tea cookies I had heard so much about on www.chocolateandzucchini.com and let me say they were soooo worth the hunt! We ordered pomegranate black tea with "bubbles" (tapioca balls) and got three of the special cookies; almond, strawberry/vanilla, and green tea. Then we walked around a bit; M showed me his favorite kitchen store; "Fishs Eddy" - wow! It's like Sur La Table only *way* cooler and more unique stuff. I want the Alice in Wonderland plate set!

Then we headed up to Central Park and walked through about half of it. We saw a giant carousel and people watched in "The Mall", which is a great archway of trees. We headed towards Bethesda fountain and Terrace where we saw hoards of brides and grooms doing portraits on this holiday weekend! We ducked under a tiled archway which brought us to the remote-controlled racing boat pond and the Alice & Wonderland statue. Then we exited right next to the Metropolitain Museum of Art on Fifth Avenue. I thought it was closed today (it's Monday AND a holiday) but it turns out it wasn't!!! We headed in and check out all the etruscan treasures and the roman sculptures. We sat on the stoop of the Met and decided fasting all day on this agenda was a bad idea and it was time to eat! We headed back to the lower east side to Alphabet City. (Madonna lived on A street when her career kicked off). On the way to the subway we passed the Flatiron building. We stopped in a local community garden to soak up some more nature. We ate our evening meal at a fantastic German restaurant and headed to Max Brenner's "Chocolate by the Bald Man" for dessert. S'mores by sterno on the table at sunset. What a day!
