Unpacking into the house is really surreal. It's a little like we just mail-ordered all our stuff. I'm opening boxes and saying "oh, here's this!" and I know just where it goes. Really strange. We're putting some stuff back where it went (mostly the kitchen is the same) but many things are getting rearranged. There are a few broken items but after four moves (not including the between truck transfers) it is to be expected. Most items are replaceable or fixable except for where the finish is worn off something. We aren't done unpacking so we haven't found everything. The move back this way was a little more annoying in the sense that the New York pack crew was less careful with our stuff. They threw more things in boxes without wrapping, and didn't mark some fragile boxes that were fragile (as in, the whole box is full of glasses). We still don't have a TV or any speakers so it's pretty quiet around here. We unwind by going to the movies or reading, or having a glass of wine with the neighbors. Next week I've got some work and a bunch of interviews so we're trying to unpack as quickly as possible. It's making all the difference in the world to not be working while we're unpacking. It just makes everything go so much more smoothly!
Why?
After 14 years of LA, the things we didn't like about living here finally wore us down and we decided to move away. Our first choice was Portland, Oregon. After months of interviewing, neither of us could secure a job. We turned our sights to the next city on the list, New York. We lined up jobs and moved at the end of March 2008.
Apparently this was a bad idea. Things were not as they seemed and New York was not a good fit. We learned some good, hard lessons about life. We moved back to LA (four months later!) because the most important things were:

- be with our friends and close to our sisters
- advance our careers in a market we understand
- enjoy a low cost of living so we can save & travel
This is what makes us happy and apparently we had to move away to get our priorities straight. We still LOVE NEW YORK! We just enjoy it more as tourists...

Unpack
So today we went to a French Bulldog meetup in the morning where little B ran himself ragged for a couple hours. Then he was happy to sleep the rest of the day while we unpacked. Today was our second full day of unpacking and we were able to mostly finish the kitchen and get much of the office unpacked. A couple friends came over for a little while and helped, then we went all went out to dinner to our favorite cajun place in Hermosa Beach.
