re-nest: Movers

Why?

After 14 years of LA, the things we didn't like about living here finally wore us down and we decided to move away. Our first choice was Portland, Oregon. After months of interviewing, neither of us could secure a job. We turned our sights to the next city on the list, New York. We lined up jobs and moved at the end of March 2008.

Apparently this was a bad idea. Things were not as they seemed and New York was not a good fit. We learned some good, hard lessons about life. We moved back to LA (four months later!) because the most important things were:

- be with our friends and close to our sisters

- advance our careers in a market we understand

- enjoy a low cost of living so we can save & travel

This is what makes us happy and apparently we had to move away to get our priorities straight. We still LOVE NEW YORK! We just enjoy it more as tourists...

Movers

I'm in the process of screening movers for our cross-country move. We are eliminating a considerable amount of stuff, but we will still have stuff to get from here to there. I'm looking on the Better Business Bureau and Yelp (yeah for Yelp!) and asking friends. So far I've gotten quotes from Mayflower and Delancey Street. I have narrowed my final choice for quotes to United Van Lines, Northstar, and Olympic Van Lines. If anyone has an experience good or bad with any moving company, please share! *update* I've picked Northstar for my finaly quote. Looks good on Angie's List!

Our move will include them packing, loading, and storing while we look for a place. Plus they have to swing by Viesso and pick up our bed frame and sleeper sofa (for you all to come visit!). The other tricky thing is the Piano. Our tuner recommended a very nice couple who liv here in LA. They are getting their 1925 Steinway rebuilt and will need one for 3 months while that is done. The timing is just right for everyone so we're in the process of writing up a contract.
